Secret 7”
WINNING SUBMISSION
Why?
My artwork was exhibited at NOW Gallery in March 2024 for a secret auction supporting War Child, raising £210K. Secret 7” takes 7 tracks from 7 musicians and 100 of each is pressed to 7” vinyl. I chose Hozier’s “Swan Upon Leda.” It references the Greek myth of Leda and the Swan, where Zeus, attracted by Leda’s beauty, transforms into a swan to forcefully impregnate her.
How?
The origami paper swan represents the soft, innocent and angelic deception put on by Zeus. The contrast mirrors Hozier’s song chorus, with gentle and screaming octaves, possibly depicting Leda and Zeus. Leda, represented by the blue sky, symbolises freedom and choice, while Zeus tries to infiltrate with a map on the swan. However, the faint sky grid map lacks coordinates, leaving Zeus out of reach in this version of the story, as Hozier states, “what never belonged to angels, had never belonged to men.”
